Chiyoko SzlavnicsCA/DE

Chiyoko Szlavnics is a canadian composer and visual artist based in Berlin, Germany. Her work embodies a fertile interplay between sound and image: imagined music inspires certain drawings, and some of her non-compositional drawings have shaped her music. Szlavnics's compositions have been featured at various international festivals, have also been performed in intimate venues by small chamber ensembles, have been honoured by radio broadcasts, and have appeared in numerous publications. Szlavnics attended the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, the Banff Centre for the Arts, the University of the Arts in Berlin, and took some private composition lessons with the late James Tenney in Toronto, and Walter Zimmermann in Berlin.
