Local vs Global

In a wired world, where music and ideas from the remotest corners are as accessible as if from just down the road, is there still such a thing as a local sound?  This two-day roundtable brings together musicians, composers, programmers, writers and scholars to discuss the issue from all angles.  Principally from the Netherlands and Canada, many of the participants have spent much time working in and touring other parts.  The public is invited to listen in on and take part in discussion revolving around:

• The factors that make a local sound possible, or on the other hand impossible, in a global world
• The opportunities and challenges inherent in bringing musicians and repertoire from another place
• Borrowing – the dynamic and what it means to the borrower and the borrowee
• The composer’s experience of local / global
• The musician’s experience of local / global
